Make the CHOICE to change

I began my healthy lifestyle just 7 years ago.  I want everyone to know that it’s not too late to make changes. No matter what your lifestyle looks like now, you can make simple choices to change.  I know this because I was a heavy drinker and I smoked cigarettes for 30 years.  I used to eat fast food, fried food and junk food on a regular basis.  I made my meal decisions based on the type of meat I had in the fridge or freezer. I ate the standard American diet, didn’t exercise and lived a stress filled life.

I remember on many occasions thinking that I needed to make changes to my lifestyle.  I tried so many fad diets over the years.  I would “do” the diet for a few days or a week, I would lose a few pounds and then I would go back to my normal habits and gain it all back again. I joined a few gyms over the years.  Usually around new years when I resolved to make positive changes.  It would last a month or so and again I was back to my old habits.  I can’t tell you how many times I tried to quit smoking. I knew how bad it was for me and I kept going back.  I tell you this because I don’t want you to give up.

In 2013, at the age of 49, I finally said enough is enough.  I quit drinking alcohol.  I quit smoking cigarettes.  I started to exercise on a regular basis, and I started eating right.  As soon as I made the choice to stop drinking.  I knew I could quit smoking too.  For me, they went hand in hand.  Taking the 1st step in the right direction is all it takes.  Making a commitment to yourself and sharing that intention with someone else is the key.  Was it easy?  NO.  Was it worth it?  YES

After a few months I started feeling better physically and I decided to look at my diet.  I decided to try to cut meat out of my diet.  I was just going to do it for one week.  I found some good recipes and made it fun to try new things.  After a week, I didn’t miss the meat at all, so I decided to try another week.  It’s now been 6 years eating a vegetarian diet.

I wanted to add more fruits and veggies to my diet so after about a year of being vegetarian, I started juicing every morning.  I love juicing and I really noticed a difference in how I felt within a few weeks.  I had more energy and an overall sense of a positive well-being.  I felt really good all the time.  I was happier than I can remember being.  I didn’t realize that I didn’t feel good until I started to feel amazing.  All this from changing my diet, lifestyle habits and exercise.

Around the same time, I also added a meditation practice into my daily routine.  I had learned to meditate years before but I was not doing it on a regular basis. Starting out with just a few minutes a day is all it takes to make a habit.

In 2016, I decide to go back to school to become a health coach.  I already had a bachelor’s degree in health education, but I wanted to learn more.  I wanted to help others to feel good too.  I started my health coaching business and love helping others just like you to live your best life. I started walking groups, healthy cooking classes and mediation.


In 2019, I became a certified yoga instructor.  I have a daily yoga practice and I personally walk 4.5 miles every day.  I am 55 years old and I feel amazing.  I don’t take any prescription medications; I only go to the doctor for physicals.

The key to success for me was taking the 1st step.  As I began to feel better, I naturally wanted to do more to feel even better.  All it takes is making the choice to take that 1st step and you too will be on your way to a healthier you.  If I can do it you can too!  Make the choice to live your best life!
